Access to precision oncology is foundational to cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Research Summary

I’m a doctor and scientist, and my main focus is taking what we learn in the lab and turning it into better treatments for cancer patients. As Director of Precision Oncology and Advanced Therapeutics at CancerCare Manitoba, my goal is to quickly apply new discoveries to improve the survival and quality of life for cancer patients.

I work in three main areas:

  1. Biomarker Discovery: I collaborate with various experts to analyze large amounts of genetic data. We look for specific biological traits that can predict if a targeted treatment will work better for a particular cancer or patient. These discoveries are foundational to precision oncology.
  2. Optimizing Care Pathways: I team up with diagnosticians, pathologists, programmers, and engineers to implement new technologies and improve diagnostic approaches. This helps clinical teams make faster and more accurate decisions about cancer treatment, making precision oncology more accessible.
  3. Clinical Trials: I work with a diverse group of experts to design and lead local and national clinical trials, especially for patients with lung cancer, upper gastrointestinal cancer, and soft-tissue or bone cancers. These trials help us test whether our new precision treatments are better than the current standard care.

My success in research depends on using novel technologies and working in close collaboration with experts from various fields to bring innovative discoveries directly to patient care.

Goals

  • To improve the quantity and quality of life of all patients diagnosed with cancer.
  • Improve and enhance multidisciplinary cancer research.
