Research Summary
Most recent research efforts have been involvement in clinical trials such that the Prostate Centre now has a clinical trial available for almost every disease state in the prostate cancer spectrum. The use of MRI in prostate cancer, a prostate cancer tissue tumour bank and the utility of circulating tumour cells have also been areas of my interest. A database of all patients seen at the Manitoba Prostate Centre now has mature data to provide information regarding long term outcomes.
Goals
To expand the research program at the Manitoba Prostate Centre with additional clinical trials and report on the long-term outcomes of surgery and conservative management of prostate cancer.
Research Biography
I was appointed the Medical Director of the Manitoba Prostate Centre in 2006. Establishment of a research program was a priority. The goal was to first establish a framework and then build the infrastructure for an independent, robust research program for years to come. It began the following year with the creation of a database of all the patients seen at the Centre with a database manager as its custodian. A research coordinator/nurse was hired to allow clinical trials to be offered through the Centre. Next, a Prostate Centre Tissue Tumour bank was established which was linked with the clinical data in the database. Our Prostate Centre clinical trials unit now has a research director, a staff of three nurses and the database manager. I am and have been a co-investigator on many of the trials performed through the Centre. I assumed the role of Acting research director in November 2021. I am a member of the Research Institute in Oncology and Hematology at Cancer Care Manitoba.
