New cancer drugs hold great promise but often require complex treatment protocols.

The last number of years have seen a proliferation of new innovative cancer drug therapies being tested in clinical trials at CCMB, nationally, and around the world. Some of these therapies have since become available for clinical use while many more are showing promise in current trials.

National trial evaluates Therapeutic Plasma Exchange in septic shock patients

Septic shock, a life-threatening infection, is among the most common reasons for admission to ICUs in Manitoba and is a leading cause of death. Septic shock leads to uncontrolled inflammation and coagulation abnormalities. Apart from antibiotics and supportive care, there are few treatments available. Cancer patients are at higher risk of infections and septic shock due to immunosuppression from the underlying disease and chemotherapy.

Access to patient populations of all demographics and cancer types, leadership commitment, collaboration opportunities, strong partnerships, and the support of funders, policymakers and the larger community make the Clinical Trials Unit at CancerCare Manitoba the perfect environment for oncologists to treat patients and participate in research trials.

The CTU has extensive experience across a spectrum of clinical trial activities, and offers the following services:

  • Protocol and consent development
  • Case report form design
  • Budget and contract negotiation
  • Management of ethics documentation, including initial submissions, amendments, and safety reports
  • Completion of regulatory documentation
  • Screening patients for eligibility
  • Obtaining patient consent
  • Conducting patient evaluations
  • Case report form completion, data management

The CTU Team

Delivering the very best service, support and science.

Led by Jim Slater, the Clinical Trials Unit consists of nearly 50 committed team members, including Research Nurses, Clinical Research Professionals, and Support Staff.

The team is directly involved in providing Manitobans with the opportunity to access novel therapies, allowing patients to gain early access to promising new cancer treatments and furthering our knowledge of cancer and benign hematologic disorders.

Hematology clinical trials group

Led by Hematologist, Dr. Pamela Skrabek, the hematology clinical trials group is composed of research staff who manage clinical trials for cancers and blood disorders within the lymphoproliferative, hematology, blood and marrow transplant, and leukemia sites within the adult population.

Solid tumour clinical trials group 1

Led by Gynecologic Oncologist, Dr. Alon Altman, the solid tumour clinical trials group 1 is composed of research staff who manage clinical trials for cancers of the genitourinary, thoracic, gynecology and skin disease sites within the adult population.

Solid tumour clinical trials group 2

Led by Medical Oncologist, Dr. Ralph Wong, the solid tumour clinical trials group 2 is composed of research staff who manage clinical trials for cancers of the gastrointestinal, liver, breast, sarcoma, brain, head and neck and pain and symptom disease sites within the adult population.

Pediatric clinical trials group

Led by Pediatric Oncologist/Hematologist, Dr. Geoffrey Cuvelier, the pediatric clinical trials group is composed of research staff who manage clinical trials for all cancers within the pediatric population.
