Conduct research close to patients
Access the whole patient population in a research institute located within a major cancer treatment centre.
Our research is informed by real-world challenges encountered by CCMB oncologists. We are dedicated to conducting research that is pragmatic and leads to improved outcomes for Manitoba cancer patients.Â
As the sole legislated authority for treating cancer in Manitoba, all cancer patients come through our doors providing general population access for researchers.
A culture of collaboration
Access to colleagues, peers, and leadership
Central to our work at the Institute is our culture of fostering creativity, sharing of ideas, and new ways of thinking — particularly between fundamental scientists and clinical researchers. This is backed by the support and encouragement of leadership, peers, policymakers, funders, and the broader community — with the common goal of improving outcomes for cancer patients. The physical environment, our new purpose-built labs, enable collaboration by removing barriers and literally bringing people closer together.
Technologies to discover
State-of-the-art platforms at your service
The Paul Albrechtsen Research Institute CancerCare Manitoba maintains maintains investment, support, and upgrades for a curated series of five major resource and technology platforms for use by member scientists. Our platforms include The Manitoba Tumor Bank, Next-Gen Sequencing, Cancer Modelling & Imaging Core, Manitoba Cancer Informatics, and Single Cell Technologies. These platforms are interrelated and have been selected to support cancer research priorities in Manitoba. The platforms also facilitate scientific investigation in multidisciplinary research studies.
Innovation through multidisciplinary teams
Integrating fundamental and translational investigation with clinical and health services research
Owing to the complexities of the disease and emerging technologies, breakthroughs in cancer research require collaboration across disciplines. This begins with fundamental laboratory science where hypotheses, informed by real-world clinical challenges, are formed and tested. Translational research bridges fundamental science and studies in patient populations. These hypotheses move on to evaluation in clinical applications. And finally, the ever-increasing demand to improve healthcare efficiencies and patient experience drives health services research. Enhancing multidisciplinary research is a core strategy at the Institute.
